How the County Counts Were Calculated
The SPC dataset contains up to four county fields for a tornado record. This page counts the tornado once in every listed Michigan county it affected. A single track that crosses from one county into another therefore appears in both county totals.
That method is appropriate for county involvement because both counties experienced the event. It also means the county totals will not add up to the statewide number of tornadoes.
- Period of record: completed calendar years 1950-2024; Michigan records in the file begin in 1951.
- Event filter: State code MI in the SPC actual-tornado dataset.
- County method: count each nonzero f1, f2, f3, or f4 Michigan county code once per tornado record.
- Intensity context: EF2+ includes records with magnitude 2 or higher under the F/EF scale used for the event date.
- Tie handling: counties with equal totals remain adjacent; table order does not imply a statistically meaningful difference.
